QO Sports Are Underway: School doesn’t officially begin until August 30, but tryouts for fall sports began on August 14. These Quince Orchard High School students are practicing for the girls’ soccer team.
At Five Below, Manager Gordon Purnell was waiting for his big shipment of school supplies the week of August 9 after the initial shipment of supplies went quickly. “We sold out of binders last week,” he said.
It’s the basics such as reusable lunch bags, book bags and pens and pencils that are the big sellers at the Kentlands discount store. “Glittery pencils are hot sellers.”
Fleet Feet Shoes encouraged customers to take advantage of Maryland’s tax free shopping week August 8 – 14, as did Payless Shoes.
Steve Kroger, an employee at the Payless Shoes Kentlands location, said the large sign in the window touting tax free shoppers was an incentive for many customers to stop in. “I think the sign and tax free shopping has helped,” he said. “I think tax free has been an incentive to buy.”
Meanwhile, some kids are also getting into school mode. The Kopsidas sisters of Lakelands each had their own opinion about the prospect of the looming school year.
“I’m excited to see my friends but not excited about the work,” said 13-year-old Addie. Sister Caroline, 10, said she’s excited to go back to school because she’s starting middle school.
Meanwhile, 8-year-old Kristina is not all that eager to head back to class. “I’m not excited to go back to school because it’s boring and a lot of work,” she said.
Lakelands resident Ashley McDanald is sort of looking forward to the start of school but thinks once it’s here she’ll be longing for the lazy days of summer.
Connor Quinn of Kentlands said while he’ll miss playing at the pool, he’s ready to see friends from school again and he likes math. He also is ready to see what’s in store for him in second grade.
