That’s an increase of 20 students in the general population over last year’s enrollment figures, according to RCES Assistant Principal Cathrine Shinn.
At today’s sneak peek, students were able to meet their teachers and visit their classrooms for the first time.
“It’s been wonderful. The kids are so excited to meet their teachers,” said Shinn. “And they want to give a hug to the teacher they had the year before too.”
According to Shin, RCES parents were equally excited to meet the teachers who will be teaching their children this year.
The RCES population does not include The Learning Center program any longer.
The program, which included 32 students last year, was moved to Jones Lane Elementary School to provide some extra room for the growing population at RCES, according to Shinn.
She already misses these children. “There is sadness in our hearts,” she said.
Because of these changes, RCES students may notice there is one less portable on the school grounds freeing up some more playground space. Shinn said there are five fourth grade classrooms housed in the portables and the Bar-T after school program is located at the sixth portable classroom. Art and music classes, she said, have dedicated rooms and these teachers will not be pushing around carts this year.
The first day of school for all Montgomery County Public Schools’ students is Monday, August 30 and Shinn, who is celebrating her third year at RCES, sounds excited.
“We have an amazing staff,” she said.
