Gaithersburg City Council members Jud Ashman, Michael Sesma and Kentlands Community Foundation Chair John Schlichting line up accordingly at last year's 5K event.

In less than 24 hours, the 17th annual Kentlands/Lakelands 5K takes off from Market Square at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 4.

The event has grown to be the largest 5K race in Montgomery County and is hosted by the Kentlands Community Foundation (KCF), in partnership with the city of Gaithersburg. This year’s race is limited to 1,500 registrants and two days before the race there were only 240 spots left. Race day registration costs $40 and will take place from 6:30 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. only if the event has not already sold out.

Area residents are reminded to observe the parking and driving restrictions before and during the race.

“It is the one morning each year that we ask our friends and neighbors to join us in supporting the race by keeping the roads free of traffic for our participants,” said Todd Anderson, course director. “I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience and cooperation.”

Registered participants can pick up their race packets on Friday, September 3 from 3 – 8 p.m. at Fleet Feet Sports, 255 Kentlands Boulevard. Late registration costs $35 and is taking place at the sports store during the same time period unless it sells out. Noodles & Company is also hosting a runner’s appreciation night from 3- 9 p.m. and will donate 25 percent of its proceeds to the KCF.

The course itself winds through Kentlands and Lakelands starting and finishing on Main Street behind the Market Square Plaza. It features two water stops and live entertainment along the way and serves as the opening activity for the 2010 Maryland Senior Olympic Games. Half of the race’s proceeds are donated to local charities.
