5K Run/Walk for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
The second annual St. Jude 5K Run/Walk for the Cure will take place on Aug. 18 at 8 a.m. in Baker Park to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“The race, a scenic 5K loop around Baker Park, is perfect for a first-time race runner and is also great for our more competitive runners. We will have music to help get you pumped up, a professional photographer to capture you crossing the finish line and some delicious refreshments for everyone to enjoy. Plus every runner and walker will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win some exciting prizes,” said program organizer and Urbana resident Rachel Cuesta.
Cuesta, 24, started the program in 2010 after a new year’s resolution to raise money for a worthy charity. More than 300 runners and walkers participated in the first race, plus dozens of sponsors and a dozens of volunteers.
“I have a great team of family and friends,” said Cuesta. “They are helping me to spread the word about the race through networking, meeting with sponsors, and even posting flyers. I am very grateful for my support system.” The 2010 race collected $10,000 for the charity.
After a year’s break, Cuesta said, “We are back in action and hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.” The goal for this year’s event is 500 participants and to raise $15,000 for St. Jude, she said.
Registration fees are $20 per participant until Aug. 1, and then $25 up until race day. Children 10-year-old and under can race for free. Those who register on or before Aug. 1 will receive a commemorative race day T-shirt. Race Day registration will be available from 6:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
